Tammi Jonas was a devoted vegetarian. But her lifestyle took a 180° turn after she got pregnant with her third child. This vegetarian mom finally got to taste a real burger, after decades of soy-based products – and the rest is history.
Now, this 49-year-old eats more meat than ever before – and also runs her very own meat farm, reports Unilad.
In her early years, Tammi Jonas read a book about animal mistreatment on farms and meat factories – and decided to become a vegetarian.
“A burger would fix this”
This Australian mom stayed away from meat for a long time – until her latest pregnancy.
“I was at work one day and just thought: ‘a burger would fix this.’ I went back to red meat, so beef and lamb, once a week throughout the pregnancy, and it was some years longer before I had any pork or poultry.”
“I never thought it was immoral to take an animal’s life for food – I’ve always been comfortable with my place in the food chain, but I thought it was immoral to treat [animals] cruelly, to not allow them to go outside and breathe fresh air and to be confined in crowds in sheds,” said Tammi.
Want to treat the animals in a good way
She soon took her meat-eating to the next level – and together with her husband Stuart, the 49-year-old started looking into opening her own farm – with the goal of treating animals ethically.
“Some people will draw an ethical line that killing is bad. But I don’t believe that – I don’t think killing an animal for consumption is unethical if it has a good life,” Tammi told the Daily Mail Australia.
She and her husband have now been running their family farm for eight years. The former vegetarian eats more meat than ever before.
