If you had the chance, would you work less than you do now for the same pay? I would say yes in a heartbeat, even though I enjoy my job.
If you are over 40 years, it might be a good idea to reduce your working hours. According to a new study, at this age is detrimental to work more than three days a week.
The study, which aimed to compare different streamlined working hours, was conducted in Australia by economy researchers.
Measuring stress levels
More than 6,000 people participated in the survey, which concluded that the optimal time to work is three days a week. Researches analyzed the participants’ work habits and measured their stress levels for a week. Among other things, the subjects had to read aloud and memorize different number combinations under limited time.
Performance drops after 25 hours
After taking into account factors like quality of life, financial security, and family, the researchers concluded that a 25-hour working week is the most effective. After that, stress and fatigue will reduce work efficiency and speed.
“Work can be a double-edged sword, in that it can stimulate brain activity, but at the same time, long working hours and certain types of tasks can cause fatigue and stress which potentially damage cognitive functions.” Said economics professor Colin McKenzie who participated in the study.
Even if you might take the study with a pinch of salt, a 25-hour workweek sounds like a dream. You get a profitable career without missing sacrificing a good part of your life!
