I love brainteasers and tricky puzzles. When I was little, my teacher Miss Miller would give us different problems and puzzles to solve. It was a welcome break from the usual schoolwork – and it really got the brain going!
Anything that makes us more active is incredibly important in our passive and mostly computer-controlled world.
Being forced to think outside the box really does you good, and taking a few minutes out of my day to solve a brainteaser or crossword always gives me energy and keeps me sharp.
It’s also fun to challenge yourself and test your limits!
I found this riddle earlier today. Apparently, it’s one of the many tests used by the FBI when assessing new recruits. The goal is to test the recruits’ logical thinking and intuition.
So you could say that this brainteaser tests if you’ve got what it takes to be a police officer. I have to say, that really motivated me to try a bit harder at this challenge!
Based on science
In the picture below, two women are sitting facing one another. Your mission is to figure out who the boy’s Mom is.
This is not a trick question, where the answer is something like “neither of them are” – one of the women definitely is. But is it the one to the right or the left?
Now, think about it for a minute or two. Study the women above, and try to think of which properties and mannerisms could be described as maternal. The answer is based on real science.
The answer is listed under this photo, so decide now – is the boy’s mother the woman to the right, or to the left?
The answer is the woman to the left. But why?
She sits with her legs pointing in the child’s direction, and she is leaning forward slightly. Both these details are important clues that she is protective of and attentive to the child.
Also, the boy is facing his mother. That’s the natural thing for a child to do when their mother is nearby.
