Having “the talk” with your kids about the birds and the bees can be quite embarrassing. But this story takes the prize!
Some parents are completely comfortable with sitting down and explaining to their kids how babies – other parents, not so much. Men in particular seem to have some trouble speaking freely about these things with their kids. It doesn’t have to be tricky though – a little honesty goes a long way, and the talk will be over before you know it!
A daughter had just come home from school. As she stepped inside the house, her father asked her, “So, what did you learn today?”
She couldn’t wait to tell him all about her day.
She said, “We learned that boys are different from girls.”
Her father replied, “Oh?”
She went on, “Yeah, my teacher said that boys have a thing that girls don’t.”
“Um, yes, they do,” he responded nervously. He couldn’t come up with anything else that moment, so there was a brief silence – until the daughter continued.
“It’s how boys realize that they’re boys. They can see the thing hanging around and know: Ah, I’m a boy.”
The father, thinking that he’d rather be anywhere else but here having this conversation with his daughter, began thinking about excuses to go outside for a while.
She continued: “Did you know that boys swell up when they see a girl?”
His palms sweaty, he stuttered: “Ah, um, well…”
He was trying desperately to change the subject, when she asked:
“Why do girls like it that boys have these things?”
The father didn’t know how to respond. After all, all men had asked themselves this question at some point. Again, he could only stutter.
But she didn’t even wait for his reply, since she had her own: “Well, because it shakes when he moves, and when the girls sees that, she knows it’s a boy and likes him. Then the boy sees the girl and swells up, and the girl knows that he likes her too. Then they get married. And then they get cooked.”
The last part left the dad a bit confused, but overall, she had explained it pretty well, he thought.
Enthusiastically, she went to grab her school bag. “I drew a picture of what we learned today. Do you want to see it?”
The dad wasn’t quite sure whether he wanted to, but his curiosity got the best of him. And when he saw the drawing, he had to sit down for a minute.
The crayon drawing in front of him showed, in his swollen, woman-enticing glory, a big, male turkey. The bright red skin flap hanging above his beak – that thing which the lady birds find so irresistible – was huge, and he had his tail feathers proudly up in the air.
Her father’s fit of laughter made the little girl angry for a second, but when he told her how much he loved the picture, she quickly forgot about it. He will certainly never forget it though!
