There are many of us, people with a distinguished taste, that enjoy having an ice-cold glass of gin and tonic at least once a day.
Of course, not in excess, drinking with moderation is the most important thing – only then can you appreciate the amazing taste of a well-mixed G&T, and enjoy it without the problems that come with alcohol addiction.
But did you know that not only is gin & tonic delicious, but it also helps you lose weight? Well, that’s according to a Latvian study.
Researchers from the Sigulda University, in Latvia. During 2017, concluded that gin boosts your body’s ability to burn calories for one hour after drinking it, writes the site IFL Science. The report points out that the drink is made from antioxidant-rich juniper berries, which speed up your metabolism.
A low-calorie drink
The study, published in the journal Journal of Food & Nature, studied mice given regular doses of the drink – which produced a 17% increase in their metabolic rate, according to the site Deccan Chronicle.
Gin is also one of the lowest-calorie alcoholic drinks on the market and a regular “shot” usually contains only 97 calories.
The researchers argue that after the study, they concluded that gin produces an “afterburn” effect.
“Consumption of gin resulted in a marked increase in metabolic rate, which indicates the spirit may have a slimming effect on the body,” said Thisa Lye, the person leading the study, according to Deccan Chronicle.
Drink Responsibly
They also write that juniper berries – the important main ingredient – have several health benefits. For example, they can be used to relieve a bloated stomach and also aid digestion. According to a study published in the Journal of Diabetes Nursing in 2008, it was also found that gin is the best, or safest, drink for diabetics.
So gin is not only a tasty, low-calorie drink – but it can also improve our digestion and metabolism. Talk about good news!
However, we can’t point this out enough, drink responsibly!
