It’s often said that talking to yourself is the first sign of madness. But new research shows that it’s actually the other way around!
I talk to myself on a daily basis, so this doesn’t come as a surprise to me.
So the next time you pass some mysterious person muttering to himself or herself, you might just have met a genius!
Here are four reasons for why talking to yourself makes you smarter:
1. Your thoughts become more organized
When you talk out loud to yourself, you focus more on what you’re doing, which makes it easier for your brain to process things. Giving word to your thoughts can make them easier to deal with and understand.
2. Your memory improves
People who talk to themselves are more likely to remember things than people who don’t. Saying something out loud gives it more weight and higher priority in the brain.
3. You become more effective
Studies show that speaking to yourself makes you think more clearly. If you’re looking for a lost item, talking about the item can help you find it. This is because the brain conjures up a mental image of the object, increasing the chance that you find it faster.
4. You achieve your goals
People who talk about themselves – especially about their ambitions and goals – are more likely to achieve them than those who don’t. If you state your goals out loud, you’ll have an easier time focusing on them and doing what you need to do in order to achieve them. It also strengthens your belief that you will succeed!
