Since the beginning of time, humanity has been looking for ways to live as long as possible. Researchers now seem to have found a solution – and it’s not the low-calorie diet and exercise regime you might think, according to Metro UK.
People that live to the age of 90 or older go by the name of “super-agers”. But to have a good chance to get there, you should drink one or two glasses of wine a day – and put on some extra weight. According to this study.
Reduced risk of premature death
The study was conducted at the University of California, where researchers monitored 1,700 elderly people’s living habits for 15 years. They discovered that the elderly who drank between one and two glasses of wine a day reduced the risk of premature death by as much as 18%. Those participants in the study who also carried a few kilos of overweight without falling in obesity had a 3% lesser risk in the same category.
Five factors that come into play
The researchers observed five factors that helped prevent the risk of premature death:
- Have a hobby
- Have some extra weight
- Exercise regularly
- Drink 1-2 glasses of wine per day
- Drink coffee
“I have no explanation for it, but I do firmly believe that modest drinking improves longevity. These people are inspiring – they drink wine, drink coffee, gain weight, but they exercise and use their brains. Maybe that can tell us something,” Claudia Kawas told news site Metro UK.
However, the researchers emphasize that more research is needed before you can encourage people to drink coffee, wine or put on weight.
