You probably got ripped off if you spent more than $10 for a beer at the bar.
That was the size of the bill Peter Lalor, a man from Australia, had in mind when he ordered a beer—but instead, he ended up paying over $99,000. Reports the BBC.
Peter Lalor is an Australian sports reporter visiting Manchester to follow The Ashes Cricket Series. During his stay at the Malmaison hotel, he went to the bar to have a beer, as any good Australian would do.
The bill: A$99,983.64
Peter picked a comfy seat at the pub and ordered a Deuchars IPA. This Scottish beer usually costs around $7.50, roughly 10 Australian dollars (A$).
But the moment he paid for his beer, something went completely wrong.
Instead of the usual price, the bar charged A$99,983.64 to Peter’s account.
“The most expensive IPA beer in history”
“I didn’t have my reading glasses when she presented me with a bill. I said I didn’t want a receipt and she went to leave. Something, however, made me ask: ‘How much did I just pay for that beer?’ She checked, covered her mouth, started to giggle, and refused to tell me, saying only there had been a mistake and she would fix it.” He explained.
Peter himself posted a picture sharing his jaw-dropping experience.
Peter called his wife, who was at their home in Australia, and asked her to check their balance. She did, and shockingly, it showed that A$99,983.64 was indeed missing.
“£1,000 transaction fee”
“To add insult to injury, they charged a £1,000 transaction fee. Until the money comes back, I won’t rest easy”, Peter said.
A spokesperson for the hotel said:
“We are currently investigating what happened. We have been in contact with Peter to apologize and ensure this gets resolved as quickly as possible.”
Peter later tweeted:
“It’s a good IPA beer. The original version of it won a heap of awards, including the Supreme Champion Beer of Britain, but if you are thinking that no IPA beer is worth the best part of 100,000 dollars, then I am inclined to agree with you.”
