Most of us have a special relationship with math. Good or bad, it was a mark on our childhood. A process that either helped you learn how to overcome difficult challenges, or woke up a passion that would follow you the rest of your life.
Some loved it at school, others hated it – and some were only able to appreciate it later in life. Solving problems, equations and puzzles is actually a brilliant way to keep your brain sharp and fresh.
Now let’s put your math skills to the test!
I was someone who liked math during school. But after college, where it was more about letters and other symbols, I lost both interest and desire.
Time to train the brain with math
Simple math problems were always my cup of tea. Looking at weird charts, studying advanced formulas or other overcomplicated methods just wasn’t really for me.
Even now, in my old age, I enjoy reading through a math book. Tring to find a few problems to train my mind.
It often makes me feel a little more alert – and is also quite fun. It is interesting to find out how much you remember from back in your school days.
Therefore, I thought it would be a great idea to solve an equation I found online today. Apparently, it is intended for 13-year-olds.
Can you solve this math problem?
I think the level of difficulty is perfect – not too easy, and not too hard. However, you still need to be aware of the order of operations to solve it.
That’s the key if you want to be able to solve this task.
What will the answer be?
8 – 2 ÷ 1/2 + 1 =?
If you only count from left to right, you might get the answer 13.
However, that solution is wrong. That’s not the way to go. Let’s see how to do things in the correct order.
Starting with the division
The rules of mathematics say that, in this case, one should start with the division.
2 ÷ 0.5 = 4
Then we are left with the following: “8 – 4 + 1 =?“
Now we finally do it normally from left to right – and soon, we will have the solution.
The answer is therefore 5.
