Do you get upset when you hear chewing sounds? Then you might have misophonia

Do you completely lose your ability to concentrate when someone keeps making noise? Or does it annoy you to no end when a person close by breathes heavily? Then you might have misophonia, reports the BBC.

Misophonia is a disorder in which certain sounds trigger emotional or physiological responses. It can be anything, from someone chewing with their mouth open to a whistling sound. These noises can evoke feelings of irritation, anxiety, or even panic in a person with this diagnosis.

Sounds that make you go crazy

When misophonia, or selective sound sensitivity syndrome, is triggered, adrenaline releases after hearing a particular sound. Causing tension in muscles, shaking, and rapid breathing, possibly ending in a fight or flight response.

It is extremely difficult to control these feelings of discomfort. In some extreme cases, the afflicted must avoid most social contexts where triggering sounds can occur.

20% of people has misophonia

According to the BBC, a study shows that 1 in 5 people may suffer from misophonia. But how does it happen?

For people with misophonia, the part of the brain that connects the senses with emotions becomes overactive, making it extremely sensitive to particular sounds.

It is not entirely clear if there is a cure, but cognitive behavioral therapy has proven successful in some cases.
