Being able to tell what others are thinking it’s a very useful skill. Talking is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to human communication, and picking up the little signals and gestures to decode what someone is actually thinking is a whole skill in itself.
Knowing this extra information will give you the upper hand in any situation. Is the person interested in the conversation? Does the person think you are lying? Or is the person lying themselves?
A person who lies does what is known as microexpressions. These are facial expressions that only last for a short moment due to a voluntary and an involuntary emotional response occurring simultaneously and conflicting.
Of course, lying is not okay. We all know that. As Spencer Johnson once said: “Integrity is telling myself the truth. And honesty is telling the truth to other people.” But despite that, people still lie about anything, all the time.
Subconscious body language
When someone lies, they know that their lie can be revealed if they’re not careful. An unexpected question, sudden confrontation, or even skepticism can get someone who’s lying on their toes.
As a kid, you are told repeatedly that lying is wrong. Your parents and teachers do their best to shape you into a responsible and honest individual.
Therefore, having that knowledge engraved into our common sense makes us subconsciously give off small signs that reveal when we are not telling the truth.
Our body language simply sells us out.
Which of these women is lying?
In the picture below, we can see four women. They all have their hands in different positions that say something about how they feel.
Can you see which women are lying?
A little clue: There may be more than one woman lying.
Below, the explanation.
Woman 1
Explanation: This woman is probably telling the truth. Her open hands indicate that she is opening up and has nothing to hide.
Woman 2
Explanation: Here, we see something suspicious. The woman is pulling her ear, which is a sign of nervousness. She doesn’t know what to do with her hands. This woman is lying!
Woman 3
Explanation: This woman is very interested in your conversation. She is listening carefully. Her genuine interest suggests she’s not deceiving you.
Woman 4
Explanation: Here, we are definitely dealing with a liar. According to experts, a hand to the mouth is the clearest sign that someone is lying. She hides her mouth because she knows that what comes out of it is not true.
That makes two women who are lying, number two and number four.
