Lawyer Irina is “too pretty” to get a job – now trying to become less attractive: “Men get distracted”

The fact that we live in a society that is too fixated on looks is hardly a novelty for anyone. Wherever you look all you see is well-trained, beautiful and smiling people with perfect teeth.

The desire to look as good as the people on those photoshopped magazines can make a regular person feel bad about their own appearance.

However, there is always another side to a coin.

33-year-old Irina can’t find a job, despite having a doctorate in law.

The reason? Potential employers keep telling her she’s too beautiful, reported the British site The Sun.

The vast majority of us have felt ugly at one point. Maybe having some acne, your belly is popping out, legs are too narrow – it can be anything. The idea of being “too beautiful” has never crossed my mind. But for Irina Kova, her appearance has become a problem – she can’t get a job.

“Being beautiful gets in the way”

“Even during the hiring process, being beautiful gets in the way. I have a law degree and a great CV but my recruitment agent still told me to dye my blonde hair dark for interviews,” Irina told The Sun.

Irina has since dyed her hair darker and even stopped wearing makeup.

“She said, ‘You’ll never get a job looking like that’. She was right, too. After I dyed my hair, I got offered more work. I even started wearing clear glasses – although my sight is perfect – to look more professional,” Irina continued.

“Men get distracted by my appearance”

Irina’s appearance has forced her to quit different workplaces because she received too many comments from colleagues.

“I’ve been made to feel terrible in offices. One boss told me I should stop standing out so much and learn to be more humble with my looks – I wasn’t even wearing high heels – Workplaces want everyone to look the same. Women don’t trust you and men don’t see you as a professional. Men never want to hire me. I get it – that’s because they don’t want to be distracted at work,” said Irina.

To avoid having to go to employment interviews, Irina has now started her own company – where she sells vintage clothing.

“At least now I don’t have to rely on someone else’s opinion of me   – and whether I’m too beautiful or not,” added Irina.

Appearance problems go both ways, apparently. Good for Irina, to ignore what people say and take matters into her own hands!
